MIDDLE SCHOOL DEPUTY / ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Position Overview

Reporting to the Middle School Principal, the Middle School Assistant Principal assists with the leadership of all educational and community matters in the Middle School at AIS Main Campus. The Assistant Principal supports the Principal to ensure that all programs and practices of faculty and staff are guided by and support the School's Mission and core values as well as the Middle School’s identified priorities. Working in collaboration with the academic and operational leadership teams, faculty and staff, students, parents, and the broader community, this leader supports a professional and academic environment in which all students have access to exceptional and diverse academic programs and opportunities as well as appropriate care for their social-emotional and learning needs.

Required Qualifications

  • Middle school teaching and/or leadership experience (Assistant Principal or equivalent strongly preferred)
  • Experience with and commitment to supporting Belonging, Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion for all stakeholders.
  • Strong experience supporting the social emotional development of students and supporting positive student behavior.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, which allow the candidate to work effectively with students, parents, teachers, and other school leaders.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to collaborative leadership practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s or Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership or Curriculum/Instruction and/or Certification in Educational Administration  
  • Experience with
    • Student and parent pastoral care with a kind and firm approach
    • Developing and leading professional learning, including curriculum development (US Curricular Standards, UbD, Authentic Assessment, etc.)
    • Leading student life and after-school activities
    • Positive Discipline and Restorative Justice experience
    • Project Based Learning
    • Developing and supporting innovative and contemporary approaches to teaching and learning.

Leading Student Life Initiatives and Behavior Supports

  • Develop and implement ongoing student programming that is both fun and builds community. Support the current Middle School House Program.
  • Support, in partnership with the Deans and Middle School Counselor,  grade level implementation of positive discipline strategies and class meetings.
  • Implement a behavior management system that is grounded in the school’s behavior policies and through a lens of Positive Discipline and Restorative Practices, and is focused on student learning and growth..
  • Oversee the day-to-day disciplinary issues in the Middle School, working closely with faculty and staff to ensure compliance with Middle School policies. 
  • Communicate clearly and in a timely fashion, both verbally and in writing, with students, parents and appropriate school staff regarding any disciplinary event or consequence.

  • Develop trusting relationships where participants feel safe and motivated to take risks, to learn, and to share.
  • Develop and facilitate a professional learning environment that is grounded in student learning.

Knowledge of Content and Pedagogy

  • Ensure the alignment of the curriculum standards, curriculum units, and expectations in the Middle School
  • Support teachers to develop and maintain an environment of standards-based learning, including standards-based lesson planning and assessments; evaluate multiple sources of data, differentiate to meet all students’ learning needs; and incorporate rubrics
  • Provide leadership in the areas of interdisciplinary and inquiry-based learning, integrated unit design, and other AIS instructional frameworks and strategies.
  • Support the social-emotional wellbeing of all students through comprehensive behavior support and lesson development through a Positive Discipline lens.
  • Support the use of a variety of instructional technologies to transform student learning.

Performance Responsibilities

Assume primary responsibility for:

  • Managing and handling all aspects of student behavior, including leading Middle School Deans, facilitating student mediation, and fostering communication with teachers, the school counselor, and parents, and following up as needed.
  • Supporting the kind-firm approach through Positive Discipline and Restorative Justice Lens with students.
  • Helping facilitate Open House Events with parents and parent-teacher conference programming (including student-led conferences)
  • Maintaining Student and Faculty Handbooks.
  • Sending weekly communication to staff through staff bulletin/newsletter.

Partner with Principal to:

  • Support Teachers in the areas of curriculum, instruction, and professional learning
  • Support Teacher Growth and Development through Learning Walks, Academic Monitoring, and Reporting through Observation Feedback Coaching Cycles
  • Research, develop and lead new teaching, learning, innovation, and academic pathways at AIS
  • Build strong rapport with the parent community in a way that empowers parents and serves their desires for involvement.
  • Supervise and evaluate faculty and staff as determined by the Principal.
  • Build the capacity of our Grade Level Deans, Heads of Department,  and Curriculum Leaders

Support Counselors and Administrators with:

  • Monitoring students who present academic or behavioral concerns or are on academic or behavioral probation
  • The monitoring of student attendance

Assist with:

  • The management of student-extended learning opportunities
  • The organization and running of special academic school-wide programs or events
  • The supervision of school events
  • Faculty and staff recruiting as requested
  • Working with the Heads of Departments, Team Coordinators, and Counselors


Serve on AIS Full Leadership Team and Lead a School wide Committee.

Serve as acting Principal in the Principal’s absence, as requested

Other duties as assigned by the Principal
