Middle School Green Program Teacher

Reporting to: Middle School Principal and Assistant Principal

JOB DESCRIPTION 

The Middle School Green Program Teacher is a passionate and innovative educator dedicated to inspiring environmental stewardship, sustainability, and global responsibility in students. This teacher leads the school’s sustainability initiatives—including the development and maintenance of the rooftop garden—and integrates environmental education throughout the middle school program. The ideal candidate has expertise in hydroponics, urban gardening, and climate literacy, and empowers students to take meaningful action toward a more sustainable future.

This teacher will also guide students in representing the school at local and international environmental events, including the annual COP (Conference of the Parties) conferences, fostering youth voice and leadership in climate action.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Development and Leadership

  • Lead the school’s sustainability and environmental education initiatives, including the Middle School Green Program.
  • Design and oversee the school rooftop garden, incorporating hydroponic and urban gardening systems as hands-on learning spaces.
  • Collaborate with science, humanities, and design teachers to integrate sustainability concepts across disciplines.
  • Develop a long-term sustainability vision for the school, involving students, staff, and the broader community.
  • Facilitate student-led projects that promote environmental awareness, waste reduction, and sustainable practices on campus.

Curriculum and Instruction

  • Develop and implement an engaging, standards-aligned environmental science and sustainability curriculum focused on climate change, ecosystems, renewable energy, and global citizenship.
  • Use project-based learning to help students investigate real-world environmental challenges and propose actionable solutions.
  • Incorporate technology, data collection tools, and digital simulations to enhance environmental inquiry and analysis.
  • Foster student voice by integrating advocacy, communication, and leadership skills into the curriculum.

Community and Global Engagement

  • Mentor students to participate in local and international sustainability conferences, including the annual COP (UN Climate Change Conference).
  • Partner with community organizations, environmental NGOs, and sustainability experts to enrich student learning experiences.
  • Coordinate school-wide Green Days, recycling drives, and awareness campaigns.
  • Engage families and the school community in sustainability efforts through workshops, newsletters, and volunteer opportunities in the rooftop garden.

Assessment and Reflection

  • Develop authentic assessments to evaluate student understanding of environmental concepts and sustainable practices.
  • Guide students in reflective learning through journals, digital portfolios, and community presentations.
  • Use data and feedback to refine instruction and improve program outcomes.

Classroom and Environmental Management

  • Cultivate a positive, inclusive, and collaborative classroom environment where students feel empowered to take initiative.
  • Model and reinforce sustainable habits—such as waste reduction, recycling, and responsible resource use—in daily routines.
  • Ensure safe, organized, and sustainable use of classroom and garden materials.

Collaboration and Professional Growth

  • Work collaboratively within grade-level and interdisciplinary teams to connect sustainability themes to broader learning goals.
  • Participate in professional learning related to environmental education, hydroponics, and global sustainability initiatives.
  • Contribute to the school’s strategic plan on environmental impact and education.

Cultural and Global Education

  • Integrate diverse voices, cultures, and perspectives into instruction.
  • Foster classroom discussions that build respect, empathy, and an understanding of multiple viewpoints.
  • Cultivate an inclusive environment where all students feel seen, valued, and heard.

Other Duties

  • Support school events, field trips, and extracurricular activities as needed.
  • Assist with duties such as supervising students during lunch, recess, or transitions.
  • Fulfill other responsibilities assigned by the school leadership to contribute to the overall success of the school.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher in Environmental Science, Sustainability Education, Biology, Agriculture, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).

Teaching certification in Science, Environmental Education, or equivalent experience in sustainability program leadership preferred.

Experience: 

  • Demonstrated experience in hydroponics, aquaponics, or urban gardening systems.
  • Proven ability to design and lead project-based, interdisciplinary learning experiences.
  • Experience organizing or leading student participation in environmental or global sustainability conferences (e.g., COP, Model UN Climate Summits).
  • Familiarity with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and climate change education frameworks.

Skills:

  • Fluent in English (native English speaker preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of environmental science and sustainability practices.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and project management skills.
  • Ability to engage students through experiential and inquiry-based learning.
  • Passion for youth empowerment and global citizenship.
